Everything Worth Circling on the Hamblen County Fall Calendar

Fall is the season Hamblen County plans around. The heat breaks, the lake calms down, and the calendar fills up faster than any other stretch of the year. Here is what is worth building a weekend around.

Mountain Makins Festival

The anchor event. Three days of craft, music, and food at Rose Center, drawing artisans from across the region. It has been running for decades and it has not gotten worse, which in the festival world is remarkable. Go early on Saturday for the crowds you can still move through.

Hamblen County Fair

Livestock, rides, fried everything, and the kind of evening that reminds you what county fairs were before they got polished. The grandstand events are the draw for most people; the exhibit halls are where the real local pride lives.

Downtown events

The downtown calendar has thickened considerably. Street festivals, seasonal markets, and evening events that use the Main Street corridor the way it was meant to be used. Watch the local listings — several of these are decided close to the date.

The smaller stuff

Church fall festivals, school fundraisers, fire department barbecues. None of them make a regional calendar and all of them are worth going to. This is the part of the fall season that does not advertise, which is exactly why locals should be posting them.
